Growing Compassion

History of Growing Compassion:

Founded in October 2005 by a former ESHA member, Growing Compassion is a group for families who practice Non-Violent Communication.

Group Description for Growing Compassion:

Nonviolent Communication is a model for interaction that allows us to be fully human with one another, encourages empathy and understanding, and resolves conflict without "winners" and "losers."

The benefit for a homeschool group practicing NVC, also known as Compassionate Communication, is that small or large conflicts can be resolved within the group in a peaceful and respectful manner. This makes playdates more fun, and helps the families learn to be comfortable and trusting with one another. It can prevent "playground" problems like power struggles ("bullying"), and adult problems like politics or members feeling either marginalized or overworked.

You can learn more about NVC at The Center for Nonviolent Communication or by reading Nonviolent Communication, A Language of Life by Marshall Rosenberg.

Growing & Learning Compassion is an inclusive group in Lane County, Oregon, committed to honoring ourselves and our children through Compassionate Communication. The group exists to provide a safe, real, compassionate place for families to interact.

Questions and Answers about Growing & Learning Compassion

Do I need to be an expert at NVC to join?
No! We are working on creating a group with members who are all commited to nonviolent communication. You are very welcome here if you are interested and learning, whatever your level of experience.

What does the group do?
Anything is possible, including social stuff like skating and park days, classes, and field trips. We don't have many activities yet, but hope to have more as we grow. Activities will provide a space for us to get together and enjoy ourselves in a safe, NVC environment.

Does it cost money to join?
No. If you join, you are committing to working on using nonviolent communication in your interactions with other families. You are also asked to offer at least one activity for GLC families within six months of joining, and once per year after that.

How is the group run?
People in the group are doing, I hope, only what they really want to do. As Marshall Rosenberg of CNVC says "Never do anything that you can't do with the joy of a child feeding a hungry duck." The group is run by one person, Angela Harms. No dues, no meetings, no haggling or politics.

How do I join?
Please visit the forums here, and send a private message to Angela. (You'll need to sign up, but it only takes a minute.) Say hello, maybe tell me how you heard of us or how NVC fits into your life. One I get the message, I'll add you to the list.

Is there any other contact information?
If you prefer, you can email me at Angela Harms. One day, hopefully very soon, there will be a website to visit. I'll update this page when it's ready.
